Villa Roma serves up classic Italian cooking

In between making jolly, shopping and decorating the house, my husband and I decided to sneak in a little romance with a date night.

Villa Roma in West Harwich provided the perfect setting to unwind from holiday stress. Dim lighting, Venetian stucco walls and cozy table arrangements create a comfortable atmosphere that was matched beautifully by the unhurried pace of the meal.

The menu is simple and consists of traditional Italian fare with capellini and meatballs, Bolognese sauce, lasagna, chicken or veal piccata or Marsala and the usual three Parmesan choices. Daily specials offer diversity. The night we visited, specials included a veal tip cacciatore and turkey dinner (both sold out) and linguini with white or red clam sauce. Best of all, the meals I mentioned are all under $20, with several offerings under $15.

Besides authentic-tasting food, one of the things I liked most about Villa Roma was the extra touches that make a meal an experience. Upon being seated, we were given a bowl of black and green olives with marinated baby bella mushrooms and a little pot of spicy cheese spread and Torino bread sticks to snack on while we decided what to order.

After we placed our order, our server brought more snacks – a loaf of crusty Italian bread that was topped with melted garlic butter with bits of freshly sautéed minced garlic.

All entrees come with a choice of soup or house salad with a $2 upgrade for a Caesar salad, which we decided to try. It consisted of a crisp plate of romaine lettuce with plenty of fresh shaved Parmesan and croutons that were quite garlicky. The salad was topped with anchovy fillets and tossed with a creamy Caesar dressing that tasted homemade. It was a classic version and very tasty.

The soup of the day was Italian wedding, another classic recipe that was executed well. Made with homemade chicken stock, the soup was thick with pearly acine de pepe pasta, chopped spinach and tiny meatballs. It was piping hot and very satisfying.

For the main courses, we tried the Chicken Marsala ($17) and the Linguini with White Clam Sauce ($19). The portions were quite generous, and the food was as good as anything we have tried in Boston’s North End.

The Marsala came with three planks of tender chicken, pounded and sautéed golden, resting on a mound of capellini. There were plenty of quartered mushrooms and bits of garlic in the velvety and slightly sweet sauce made with Marsala wine and a rich brown demi-glace.

Served in a giant bowl, the Linguini with White Clam Sauce was swimming in a buttery, briny broth with plenty of garlic. Thirteen littlenecks in their shells rested on top; halved grape tomatoes and a garnish of steamed broccoli added color to the tasty dish.

The meal ended on a sweet note with two Andes mint candies and a check that was wonderfully affordable considering the experience we had.

Excellent!
It was an excellent dining experience. We both had specials - I had the Lobster Cabonara and he had the Mahi-Mahi. Both dishes were plentiful and prepared perfectly. The cabonara was lunch for two the next day!
A nice touch that we always appreciate is having cheese, olives and oil at the table as it compliments a glass of wine while perusing the menu. The icing on the cake, so to speak, was the tiramisu....delicious!!!

The restaurant itself presents a lovely adult atmosphere - exactly what we were looking for that evening. The bartender was a character, the hostess was extremely pleasant and our waitress was attentive and friendly without being obtrusive. We have since passed the word about Villa Roma to several of our friends and family who frequent restaurants in the area. We sincerely enjoyed our evening and plan to return each time were in the Harwich/Chatham area.

Frommer's Review

If you didn't know about this perfect little roadhouse, you'd drive right by. Walk into the dimly lit bar area and then to one of the comfortably snug dining rooms. This old house retains the charm of Olde Cape Cod, something that is becoming harder and harder to find. On the menu is classic Italian fare, nothing fancy. There's lasagna with homemade meatballs, shrimp scampi, and a wonderfully light veal picatta. The prices are very reasonable, even cheap, considering your meal comes with a salad or soup. But the best thing about this place is the atmosphere and the friendly staff.

Good "Mom & Pop" Italian on Cape Cod
During a brief visit to the Cape this weekend, my wife Jill & I (aka "TwoJays") got a tip to try "Villa Roma" in West Harwich. Villa Roma is a fairly small place, with a nice homey atmosphere. Harry, the middle-aged, pony-tailed host had all of the waiting parties under control and provided pretty good wait-time estimates. We sensed many of the folks waiting for tables were long-time customers, as several people told us it would be "worth the wait".         More...

Best Italian on the Cape
Worth
the wait in the summer and even better in the off season! My husband and I love to find these gems when we travel -- great food in a homey atmosphere. Located in a converted house in Harwich, Villa Roma serves up the best chicken marsala this side of the North End. The pastas are fabulous and we have not been disappointed on any specials, like the monster veal chop. Be warned that in the summer, you will have a bit of a wait for a table but you can hang out on the front patio or wait inside at the bar and enjoy the smells coming out of the kitchen.

Cape Cod Dining
To say that Cape Cod has many Italian restaurants to choose from might be quite an understatement.  Pizza parlors and spaghetti houses, red-checkered table cloths and while linen, family-friendly  and upscale, they are all represented in virtually every town.  Do you know anyone who doesn't like Italian food?  I'm not sure I do.  More...

Relaxing and delicious
Villa Roma is a cozy and pleasant restaurant. The menu is limited but very, very good and the specials are a wonderful treat. I have loved every meal here. The manager and staff are very solicitous and the atmosphere is gracious. Portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable.
